Enhancing CMAQ Air-Surface Exchange for Ecosystems

For multi-media ecosystem simulations, air quality models like EPA's Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) provide important inputs in terms of wet and dry atmospheric deposition.  In order to be scientifically credible, CMAQ needs to have the best and most complete descriptions of the processes involved to provide relevant inputs to ecosystem models.

While CMAQ is a state of the science one-atmosphere model, it needs to have state-of-the-science connections to ecosystem models for multimedia analyses. The emphasis of this ecosystem research to enhance air-surface exchange capabilities in CMAQ is to add, modify, and evaluate CMAQ components for better ecosystem model linkage and land-use change study. 

The research objective is to improve uni-directional and bi-directional exchange process descriptions in CMAQ and reduce uncertainty in the model estimates of dry and wet deposition, especially for sulfur and nitrogen compounds.  Bi-directional air-surface exchange parameterizations represent state-of-the-science capabilities for regional air quality modeling.  The objective is also to incorporate missing processes in CMAQ and to make model's the land use characterization more flexible. 

This research also includes evaluation of CMAQ deposition predictions to test improvements, to suggest further model improvements, and to quantify uncertainty in deposition calculations. Tools developed as part of this research are valuable aids in analysis.  Links to key tools are provided for users.

Development
Advancing CMAQ air-surface exchange involves development of new algorithms, either replacing older science or incorporating new science, and refinement of current algorithms to maintain them at the state of the science.

Evaluation
Evaluation and sensitivity analyses are important partners to development. The evaluation of air-surface exchange parameterizations requires special data beyond the ordinary.

Post-processing tools are important to facilitate visualization or examination of outputs and aid use of CMAQ deposition outputs by other models
