Event: Cleveland County Asthma Awareness Month Activities

Description: The Cleveland County Asthma Coalition will sponsor various events in recognition of Asthma Awareness Month. On April 18th, there will be a Healthy Kids’ Day and Asthma Expo at the Dover YMCA in Shelby, NC. Art work for the Art for Asthma Contest will be accepted and displayed. Registrations for No Wheeze Asthma Camp, being held July 13-17, 2009, will also be accepted. There will also be a bake sale and a 50/50 raffle. May 1st marks Asthma Awareness Day and Air Awareness Day. The Cleveland County Asthma Coalition will announce the corporate and member Asthma Champions for 2009. Art for Asthma winners will be announced and there will be an award presentation and reception. The presentation and reception will occur at the Cleveland Mall in Shelby, from 6:00 pm -7:00 pm.
On May 5th, the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners will recognize Art for Asthma Contest winners and the 2009 Asthma Champions.
On May 8th, Asthma Awareness Storybook Sets, which are geared specifically for children, will be delivered to various destinations around the County. The books include “Brianna Breathes Easy” by Virginia Kroll, “The Lion Who Had Asthma” by Nadine Bernard Westcott, and “I Have Asthma” by Jennifer Moore-Mallinos.
May 14th will feature the North Carolina Asthma Summit in Durham, NC. The Art of Asthma story board will also take place.
On May 18th the A is for Asthma program will take place. This program, featured by the American Lung Association, aims to heighten awareness and management skills for daycare providers. The Coalition will be assisting Cleveland and Rutherford counties in this mandated education session.
On May 21st, the Asthma Basic Class will meet, which will include the Broad River Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group. The meeting will occur at the Cleveland County Office Building, South Post Road, Shelby, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. The class will feature the Cleveland County Asthma Coalition Education Teams.

Event: Asthma Fair

Description: An educational vendor/exhibitor hall. Attendees will receive both written and oral education on asthma management, triggers and asthma and allergies through lecture sessions and interactive booths. Event: World Asthma Day Awareness at Vernon Park Mall

Event: Asthma Proclamation- for Gates County, North Carolina

Description: A Proclamation will be read at the Gates County Commissioners meeting scheduled for May 6, 2009, at the Gates County Courthouse. This proclamation will publicly announce May as Asthma Awareness Month and coincide with the implementation of the Air Quality Flag program.
Gates County Public Schools, the Merchants Millpond State Park, and other local government buildings will display the color-coded flag on the flag poles which is correlated to the specific day’s ozone level. Students will learn about air quality indexes and participate in the raising of the color-coded flag at the beginning of each school day.
The Albemarle Pediatric Asthma Coalition, APAC, is sponsoring a public awareness campaign to recognize World Asthma Day on May 5, 2009, and the month of May as Asthma Awareness Month. The APAC is comprised of seven counties located in northeastern North Carolina and includes Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans counties.
World Asthma Day banners will be placed in each county at an intersection with high-traffic visibility. Additionally, promotional signs that read, “This staff and our families recognize May as Asthma Awareness Month,” will be displayed at the entrance of schools, childcare centers, and medical providers’ offices. Promotional items such as pencils and World Asthma Day stickers will be distributed to the elementary level students in all seven school districts. Three billboards located strategically throughout the seven-county area will be unveiled to the public prior to May 1, 2009, to increase the public’s awareness related to asthma. The billboard messages list three steps in maintaining good asthma management.

Description: The Asthma Alliance of North Carolina invites you to attend the annual North Carolina Asthma Summit. Event: Community Asthma Forum: Taking Asthma to School - Are You Prepared?
