Gradient and Map Scaling

The "gradient scaled from a map" calculator is designed to be used with maps that have been reduced from their original scales, so that an odd number of measurement units (say inches) corresponds to a map unit (i.e., 100 ft).

In the following example the map scale has been printed such that 1 3/8 inches is equal to 100 ft. Thus a distance measured across the map of 20 7/8 inches is determined by the calculator to equal 1520 ft.
