Genus Atractosteus (alligator gar)- Body elongate, robust. Snout somwhat shorter than other gars, stout. Color gray-green dorsally, fading to white ventrally.
Genus Lepisosteus (gars)- Body elongate, slender. Snout long to moderately long. Spots on dorsal, caudal and anal fins.
