Moronidae Genus Level Identifiers

White Bass (Morone chrysops)

General things to look for: In the freshwaters of North America, this family is represented by the Morone genus. Some basic species identifiers are found below.

Morone americana (white perch)- Distinctive "humped" appearance, with body depth greatest just anterior of the 1st dorsal fin. Missing distinctive lateral stripes.

Morone chrysops (white bass)- 1st and 2nd dorsal fin seperate. Body somewhat deeper than striped bass. Lateral stripes not as "bold", and often broken into dashes or dots.

Morone mississippiensis (yellow bass)- 1st and 2nd dorsal fin narrowly connected. Distinct lateral stripes. Lower lateral stripes are broken and offset.

Morone saxatilis (striped bass)- 1st and 2nd dorsal fin seperated. Lateral stripes distinct and not broken or offset.
