EPA ISSUES LETTER ON MTBE ISSUE

BOSTON -- The EPA released the attached letter today in response to Governor Angus King's October 13, 1998 request to opt out of the reformulated gasoline program.
EPA-New England Administrator John P. DeVillars issued the following statement on the issue:
"We are already hard at work to identify an alternative fuel that will achieve equivalent air quality benefits for Maine residents, while remaining protective of the state's water quality. We look forward to working with the State of Maine toward fulfilling these dual environmental goals."
