EPA OFFERS ASSISTANCE IN REDEVELOPING CONTAMINATED PROPERTIES

Contact: Leo Kay, Press Office, (617) 918-4154

For immediate release: November 12, 1998; Release # 98-11-5

BOSTON - The New England Office of the Environmental Protection Agency is currently offering a select number of free site assessments to municipalities and other entities interested in redeveloping abandoned, contaminated properties.

Under the agency's brownfields program, environmental consultants contracted by the EPA will perform the assessments - - valued at approximately $50,000 - - to determine the nature and extent of contamination, and to estimate the costs of cleaning up the site for redevelopment.

In order to qualify for the assessments, the property must be contaminated or suspected thereof. Also, the program is open only to public or non-profit entities, such as municipalities and community development corporations.

The EPA's selection process will be aimed at projects where a party has concrete redevelopment plans for the site once the assessment is complete. Redevelopment can involve the creation of commercial, industrial, recreational or conservation uses.

To apply for the program, or for more information, contact James Byrne at (617) 918-1389 or Paula Fitzsimmons at (617) 918-1204 or visit the following web address: www.epa.gov/region01/remed/brnfld/sassess.

The deadline for application is December 18.
