EPA COMPLETES UNDERGROUND TANK REMOVAL

BOSTON -The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it completed a $50,000 cleanup at Bix Furniture, located at 552 Bedford Street in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

Responding to a request from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to sample the contents of a deteriorating concrete underground tank, EPA identified methylene chloride, toluene and perchloroethene (PCE) in the sludge. EPA determined that excavation and proper disposal of the tank and contents was necessary to prevent an accident that could release of toxic chemicals to nearby wetlands and streams, and ultimately the Carver Pond Wellfield, which provides drinking water to the town of Bridgewater . EPA removed 10 cubic yards of contaminated material before disposing of the sludge and tank at a licensed facility.

EPA acknowledged the cooperation received from the property owners whose knowledge of past practices at the site were useful in determining cleanup.
