BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will begin a $715,000 cleanup at the former Mohawk Tannery Site located on Warsaw Avenue in Nashua, New Hampshire. EPA is hosting a public information meeting with the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and Nashua officials on Thursday, October 5th at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Amherst Street Elementary School to discuss the planned cleanup activities as well as to update the community on the status of the site.
As part of the cleanup, called a time-critical removal action, EPA will first post warning signs and secure fencing around the site to restrict public access. The EPA will:
- Sample the drums, containers and clarifier tanks on site to
characterize the contamination before disposing of the materials.
- Remove drums, containers and tanks that contain hazardous substances
to an off-site disposal facility.
- Remove and dispose of asbestos containing material from the
old tannery buildings at an off-site facility.
The former tannery operated between 1924 and 1984. During it's 60 years of operations, the Mohawk Tannery, also known as Granite State Leathers, produced sludge and acidic residues from the tanning process, much of which was disposed of on site.
