BOSTON - The United States Environmental Protection Agency announced today that a Nashua, N.H., company has agreed to pay $25,000 to settle claims by EPA New England that it violated numerous laws regarding the management of hazardous waste.
According to an administrative complaint, Keyson Airways failed to properly identify, label and store its hazardous waste. In addition, the company failed to post required emergency information and "No Smoking" signs at hazardous waste storage areas, the complaint said. The most significant of these violations was the company's failure to make hazardous waste determinations on about 18 55-gallon containers stored outside the main hangar.
"Keyson's storage system left a serious potential for reactions between incompatible wastes," said Mindy S. Lubber, Regional Administrator of EPA New England. "Many of the containers were in poor shape and not marked. In the case of a fire this could have seriously endangered workers and damaged the environment."
The action against Keyson stems from a September 1998 inspection of the facility in which EPA personnel discovered six violations. The company has cooperated with EPA and provided the agency with documents indicating it is in full compliance with hazardous waste laws.
Keyson Airways operates a facility at the airport in Nashua, NH, providing aviation services that include maintenance, refueling, painting and refinishing.
