BOSTON - The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded the KIDS Consortium Inc. of Lewiston Maine a $109,204 grant for expansion of environmental education programs for the Gulf of Maine area. Partners in the program include the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District, the Cocheco River Watershed Coalition, the Roxbury Science Workshop, Eastern Charlotte Waterways and the Tusket River Environmental Protection Association.

"This is a great project that connects kids' interest in the environment with community organizations and businesses who can benefit from the data collected by these ambitious students," said Mindy S. Lubber, EPA New England regional administrator. "What better way to prepare young people to be future leaders in protecting the environment than to engage them in stimulating learning opportunities early in life."

The Gulf of Maine Institute Without Walls is a binational, multi-jurisdictional effort that develops partnerships and educational initiatives among adults and youth. KIDS Consortium moves education beyond the classroom and allows children to apply their knowledge and skills to real community problem solving.

EPA announced a total of more than $2.3 million in environmental education grants to 165 organizations nationwide. These grants benefit the environment while educating students, teachers, and the public. EPA New England is currently accepting proposals for smaller grant requests.
