BOSTON - Work will begin this week to conduct the next phase of sampling at the Centredale Manor and Brook Village properties in North Providence, R.I. This new round of sampling will focus on possible contamination to groundwater and deeper soils.

Once the investigation is completed next year, the groundwater and soil sampling data, as well as information from an ongoing risk assessment study, will be used to determine a final cleanup approach for the site.

"This new round of sampling is another important step in gathering the information we need to evaluate long-term cleanup alternatives and select a final cleanup plan for the site," said Mindy S. Lubber, regional administrator at EPA's New England Office.

The sampling will entail EPA contractors drilling monitoring wells on the Centredale Manor and Brook Village properties. The initial work is expected to take three to six weeks to complete. The contractors will return again in the spring and summer to install additional wells.

The latest round of sampling comes after EPA conducted widespread soil and sediment sampling in and along the Woonasquatucket River which, in turn, led to an interim cleanup plan for addressing floodplain areas along the Woonasquatucket River, Allendale Pond and Lymansville Pond in North Providence.

The cleanup plan, which was subject to a 60-day public comment period earlier this year, calls for excavating about 2,500 cubic yards of dioxin-contaminated sediments and bank soils as well as restoring Allendale Dam. Following the excavation, the floodplain and riverbed will be restored using materials similar to the existing materials in the floodplain and riverbed. Wetland and riverbank restoration will be performed to repair any damage created by the removal activity.

EPA is evaluating the public comments on the interim cleanup plan and will be announcing a decision on how to proceed early next year.

The Centredale Manor site was added to EPA's Superfund cleanup list earlier this year.
