Boston- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is hosting a public information meeting on Thursday, October 18th at 7:00 pm at the Mansfield Town Hall to discuss the current status and future clean-up activities at the proposed Hatheway & Patterson Superfund Site. The site is located at 15 County Street in Mansfield, MA.
The Hatheway & Patterson site was proposed to the National Priorities List (NPL or Superfund) in September of 2001. The NPL is EPA's list of the of the country's most serious hazardous waste sites identified for possible long- term cleanup. The Superfund program makes public funds available to clean up listed toxic waste sites when private financing is unavailable.
Hatheway & Patterson Superfund Site is a 40 acre site, bisected by the Rumford River and a Consolidated Railways rail line. From 1953 to 1993, the company used the site to treat wood using solutions of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in fuel oil, and floruorochrome-arsenate-phenol salts in water as well as chromated copper-arsenate (CCA) salts in water. Prior to utilizing the pressure treatment process, Hatheway and Patterson allowed wood-treating chemicals to drip off treated lumber onto underlying soils. This practice caused surface soils to be contaminated with copper, chromium, arsenic and PCP in various areas of the site. The company ceased operations in April 1993 after having filed for bankruptcy in February 1993.
