BOSTON -- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the opening of a grant opportunity for teachers and other educators interested in environmental education. Proposals will be accepted until November 15, 2001 with awards being made in late spring.
EPA New England is expecting to award $150,000 for environmental education projects that focus on enhancing critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective decision-making skills. Priority areas include: education reform, community issues, environmental health, teaching skills, career development and environmental justice. Environmental education does not advocate particular viewpoint or course of action, but rather teaches students important skills that help them make good environmental decisions.
In 2001, the EPA awarded $185,000 to 24 New England applicants who requested grant monies ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. Most grants were for $5,000.
Projects are also encouraged that educate members of a community through a community-based organization, or educate the general public through print, film, broadcast, or other media to be more environmentally conscious and make environmentally responsible decisions.
New England schools, universities, non-profit organizations, and government agencies that would like to further environmental education programs should apply for an EPA grant by obtaining a copy of the Federal Register dated August 28, 2001 at your local library, by contacting Sarah White (617)918-1026 or by sending an e-mail with your mailing address to white.sarah@epa.gov.
The solicitation notice and appropriate forms are also available on the following web address: http://www.epa.gov/enviroed.
The deadline for submitting proposals is Monday, November 15, 2001.
