U.S. EPA BEGINS SURFACE SOIL EXCAVATION IN NEWHALL STREET NEIGHBORHOOD

BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will begin next week to excavate contaminated surface soil from ten residential properties in two areas of the Newhall Street neighborhood in Hamden, CT. EPA will be working on Morse Street west of Newhall Street and in the Bryden Terrace, Winchester Ave., Marlboro Street and Morse Street east of Newhall Street area. The properties in these two areas were identified during EPA's surface soil investigation last April as containing contaminants, primarily lead, in surface soils found to be associated with landfill materials.

Work crews will be in the neighborhood beginning Monday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.. EPA staff and contractors will be clearing trees and shrubs, excavating contaminated surface soil, and backfilling areas of excavation with clean fill, topsoil and revegetating these areas. EPA expects that it will take approximately 12 weeks to complete the soil removal and restoration work. Residents near the work areas may notice a small increase in truck traffic. Contaminated fill will be disposed of at a properly licensed off-site disposal facility.

At an open house in Hamden earlier this month, EPA met with area residents to discuss what to expect during the cleanup.
