Two New Hampshire Groups Receive $70,000 of EPA Environmental Education Grants

BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced it has awarded $16,998 of $198,700 in environmental education grants to two New Hampshire organizations, The two organizations are among 20 recipients throughout New England.

Selected from among 89 applicants nationwide, two New Hampshire organizations that received grants were the University of New Hampshire, Durham and Northeast Resource Recovery Association, Chichester.

The grants are targeted to organizations that tackle community issues, curriculum development and environmental awareness.

"Environmental education is an important building block for ensuring a safe and healthy environment for future generations," said Robert W. Varney, regional administrator of EPA's New England Office. "These grants will support many of the state's most exciting environmental education programs focusing on such issues as waste reduction, curriculum development and teacher training."

• The University of New Hampshire is receiving $4,998 for its program to train New Hampshire teachers to use multi-media, environmental education curriculum materials to benefit an estimated 7,500, 4th - 8th grade students. The program will hold workshops for teachers and will equip them with a guide to environmental education techniques, lesson plan booklet, and project suggestions . The curriculum workshops will focus on hands-on classroom activities that utilize critical thinking and environmental awareness.
  
  
• The Northeast Resource Recovery Association is receiving $12,000 for its peer matching program to promote school recycling. The program targets the state's 160 schools that are members of the NH School Recycling Club. The club will expand the existing relationships at member schools and encourage active recyclers to become active promoters and share their recycling expertise, enthusiasm and success with their peers.
