BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered two more companies, Ciba Specialty Chemicals Corporation and Organic Dyestuffs Corporation, to participate in the next phase of cleanup at the Centredale Manor Restoration Project in North Providence, R.I. Both companies were customers of the barrel refurbishing company that operated at the site until the 1970s.

This phase of the cleanup plan addresses the tailrace (a drainage swale) behind Centredale Manor and will be conducted by potentially responsible parties at the site. EPA will oversee the work.
The plan entails controlling storm drain runoff and sediment entering the tailrace, reconstructing the tailrace, and constructing and maintaining a protective cap over the tailrace area.
Field work is expected to be finished by late fall.
Four other entities last month agreed to conduct the cleanup work including Brook Village, Centredale Manor, NECC and Emhart. Six other potentially responsible parties (including Cranston Print Works; CNA Holdings, Inc.; Sequa Corporation; the Original Bradford Soap Works; Teknor Apex Company; and Unocal Corporation) will each make a financial contribution toward the costs.
The cleanup site is located on Smith Street in North Providence and includes the Woonasquatucket River and the floodplain between Route 44 downstream to and including Lymansville Dam.
