Feature: Climate Change Conferences in Massachusetts

November will be a busy month on the Climate Change issue, with the New England Council holding a Climate Change Summit on Monday, Nov. 10, in Boston and the Massachusetts Climate Action Network holding a Grassroots Climate Action Conference Sunday, Nov. 16, at Tufts University in Medford.

The Climate Change Summit, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boston Marriott Copley Place, will include regional and national leaders from the private and public sector providing their views on what New England and the Northeast need to do on the climate change front and why – and how the region can realistically achieve specific goals. A working lunch will include development of key points for the New England Council’s “Climate Change Declaration” that will be issued in the future as the council’s core position on the issue.

The Climate Action Conference, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Tufts’ Cabot Hall, will include regional and national speakers and nearly two-dozen workshops on such issues as climate change science, local climate action plans, energy-efficient buildings and green power.

The keynote speakers are Michael Northrop of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund whose topic is “Europe Leads: Cutting Carbon Affordably” and Jan Reitsma, director of the R.I. Department of Environmental Management whose topic is “Rhode Island’s Climate Plan, Local Buy-In and Regional Synergy.”
