How to use Socrata

The features below all use buttons along the top of the data table.

Learn about the data: click "Menu" and mouse over "Info," then select "About this Dataset ..."

Download data: click "Menu" and then mouse over "Download, API &RSS." Within the menu that opens, mouse over "Download this Dataset" and choose the format you prefer. You may also choose "Access this Dataset via the API" to program your own database to use the data within Socrata instead of downloading it.

Sort: to sort a single column, click its heading. Click more than once to switch between ascending and descending order. To sort more than one column at a time, click "Filter, visualize & More" and select "Sort Columns ..." Double-click the column names on the right to move them to the sorting list. Click and drag columns up or down to prioritize them. For example, to sort on date, and then location within each date, put "Date" at the top and "Location" below it. Click the small triangle on the right side of each column to switch between ascending and descending order.

Filter (for example, to see data only for a certain substance): click "Filter, visualize & More" and select "Filter ..." Use the fields to choose how to filter the data. For example, choose "substance" on the left and "equals" in the center, then type "benzene" on the right see data only for benzene. You may include as many filters as you like.

Search: enter your search term in the box in the upper right corner of the table (use the search box at the top right of the screen to search for other datasets).

Embed a data table on your own page: click "publishing" along the bottom of the screen and copy the code provided to your page.
