Albuquerque and Bernalillo County Make $265,000
Loan to Clean Up Bell Trading Post |
On April 4, 2004, the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County in New Mexico made a $265,000 loan to the Family Housing Development Corporation (FHDC) to assist with the cleanup costs associated with the Bell Trading Post property. This loan was made possible through a $1 million EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County in September 2000. The Bell Trading Post had a history of industrial and commercial occupancy, including jewelry manufacturing, from 1947 through 1992, at which time the property became vacant. Asbestos and lead-based paint were discovered in the building as well as lead-contaminated soil in the crawl space. Cleanup activities addressed asbestos and lead contamination in the soil and ground water, which was completed in August 2005. FHDC has since begun redevelopment of the Bell Trading Post property into lofts and office space. On July 1, 2004, the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County in New Mexico made a $213,000 loan to the Library LLC to assist with the cleanup costs associated with the Old Albuquerque High School Library property. This loan was made possible through a $1 million EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County in September 2000. The Old Albuquerque High School Library property is located on the site of the first public high school in Albuquerque, which was built in 1914. The campus grew to five buildings by 1940, which were vacated by the local school district in 1974 and remained vacant until 2001. Cleanup included the removal of asbestos and lead contamination and was completed in March 2005. Most of the campus has already been redeveloped into a residential community, and the Old Albuquerque High School Library property is planned for approximately 10,000-square feet of office space.
