City of Boston Makes $475,000 Loan to Clean Up Parcel 8 Property

In December 2001, the City of Boston, Massachusetts loaned $475,000 to the Boston Redevelopment Authority to assist with cleanup costs associated with the Parcel 8 property. This loan was made possible through a $500,000 EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to the Boston Economic Development and Industrial Corporation and the city’s Environmental Department in 1997. The property had a variety of past uses, including automotive repair and filling stations, and a hotel that was destroyed by fire in the 1960s. Cleanup activities at Parcel 8 began in August 2002 with the onsite treatment of certain soils as well as soil removal. Construction was completed in the summer of 2004, and the property now includes a 10-story mixed-use building. The building includes two new theaters and support space for the adjacent Boston Center for the Arts facility, 20,000-square feet of retail and restaurant space, approximately 100 residential condominiums on the upper floors, and an underground parking garage. For more information about this loan or the City of Boston EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund, contact the EPA Region 1 Brownfields Coordinator at (617) 918-1424.
