Bucks County Redevelopment Authority Makes $975,000 Loan to Clean Up Riverfront South Property

On August 19, 2005, the Bucks County Redevelopment Authority in Pennsylvania loaned $975,000 to Bensalem Redevelopers, LP to assist with cleanup costs associated with the Riverfront South property. This loan was made possible through a $1 million EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to the Redevelopment Authority of Bucks County in September 2000.  This 26-acre waterfront property along the Delaware River was originally a ship building property in the early 1900s. In 1940, it was used for storage of salt products, and in 1943 the federal government acquired the property for aluminum refining and cryolite production. In 1950, the property was used for blending chemicals for cleaning and lubricating agents as well as the repackaging of bulk materials including refrigerants and hydrocholoric acid. In 1989, the property was sold and used for the forane repackaging and warehousing. The property was vacant from 1997 to 2000, when it was acquired by Bensalem Redevelopers, LP. The loan will be used to clean up soils found to contain polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides and arsenic and ground water contaminated with chlorinated organic chemicals and heavy metals. This vacant property will be redeveloped into a mix of residential, commercial, greenspace along the Delaware River in Bensalem. For more information about this loan or the Bucks County EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund, contact the EPA Region 3 Brownfields Coordinator at (215) 814-3129.
