Jackson County Redevelopment Authority Makes $800,000 Loan to Clean Up Mechanical Products Property

On April 15, 2003, the Jackson County Redevelopment Authority in Michigan loaned $800,000 to Zimmer Marble Co., Inc. to assist with cleanup costs associated with the former Mechanical Products property in Blackman Charter Township. This was the second Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) loan made in Michigan. This loan was made possible through a $1 million EPA Brownfields RLF grant awarded to the Jackson County Redevelopment Authority in 2001. An environmental assessment revealed soil and ground water contamination caused by the release of solvents in the 1950s and early 1960s. In 2005, cleanup activities were completed. Ground water monitoring will continue on the property to monitor the long-term effectiveness of the cleanup of contaminated soil. Zimmer Marble modernized the facility to expand its product line. For more information about this loan or the Jackson County Redevelopment Authority EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund, contact the EPA Region 5 Brownfields Coordinator at (312) 886-7576.
