City of Lawrence EPA Revolving Loan Fund Aids in Cleanup of Former Church and Schoolyard |
On August 24, 2004, the Lawrence, Massachusetts, Office of Planning and Development made a $39,520 sub-grant to Lawrence CommunityWorks to assist with the cleanup costs associated with the new Our House for Design and Technology on Newbury Street. This sub-grant was made possible by a $500,000 EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to the City of Lawrence Office of Planning and Development in 1999. The cleanup, which was completed in December 2003, involved the removal of asbestos insulation, floor tiles, lead pain and pigeon guano. In addition to EPA funding, project partners leveraged $815,437 in cleanup and redevelopment funds from private funding partners, the City of Lawrence Community Development Block Grant, and Mass Technology Collaborative funding. The new Our House facility opened for operation on October 18, 2007, generating 17 job opportunities and providing free and low-cost educational and college preparation courses for teenagers; and savings, home-buying and English courses for adults.
