City of Lewiston Makes $150,000 Loan to Clean Up Sites in the Bates Mill Complex
On March 24, 2003, the Lewiston Mill Redevelopment Corporation borrowed $150,000 from the City of Lewiston's Brownfields Cleanup Revolving Loan Fund program, marking the first loan agreement under this program. This loan was made possible through grants awarded by EPA to the City of Lewiston, ME, which capitalized the loan fund with $500,000. The loan will assist with cleanup costs for Mills 1, 2, 4, 5, and 9, #1 wing, #1 Storehouse, #2 Wing, and #2 storehouse at the Bates Mill Complex. Cleanup of these nine parcels is critical to facilitating the further build-out of the Complex, which now houses a mix of commercial, banking, retail, and restaurant uses as well as open and entertainment space. Redevelopment of the 1.2 million-square-foot Bates Mill Complex is transforming a vital section of the city's neglected downtown area into a multi-use business complex that has preserved city history and stimulated investment. The City has leveraged nearly $40 million in assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment funds from federal, state, local, and private sources and the project has already created approximately 1200 new jobs. For further information about this loan or the City of Lewiston Brownfields Cleanup Revolving Loan Fund, contact the EPA Region 1 Brownfields Coordinator at (617) 918-1221.

Pilot refers to projects funded prior to 2003. Grants refer to projects funded from 2003 on, under the authority of the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act.
