City of Mansfield Makes Two Loans Totaling $200,000 to Clean Up Former Mansfield Reformatory Property

In September 2005, the City of Mansfield, Ohio made two loans totaling $200,000 to the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society to assist with cleanup costs associated with the former Mansfield Reformatory property. These loans were made possible through a $1 million EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to the City of Mansfield in September 2001. Built in 1834, Mansfield Reformatory housed an all-time high of 5,235 prisoners in April 1955. The facility was closed in 1984, and the building has since been used to film a variety of movies and music videos, including the Shawshank Redemption in 1994. The property included lead-based paint and asbestos, and cleanup activities are underway to remove these contaminants. Mansfield Reformatory will ultimately be developed into a museum and tour facility. For more information about this loan or the City of Mansfield EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund, contact the EPA Region 5 Brownfields Coordinator at (312) 886-7576.
