In March 2004, Oakland County, Michigan made a $700,000 loan to the Brown Road Group LLC to assist with cleanup costs associated with Brown Road Dump, also known as the Sanicem Landfill. This loan was made possible through a $1 million EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to Oakland County in September 2002. The 140-acre Brown Road Dump property operated as a landfill from 1964 to 1978 and sat idle until 2002, when the Brown Road Group LLC purchased the property to redevelop it for light industrial uses. Cleanup activities are underway and include the installation of a methane gas collection system that will control the methane that resulted from the former landfill by venting and burning the flammable gas. Some redevelopment has been completed on the property, including the establishment of a technology center for a Swedish auto supplier. Additional development is expected to generate at least $150 million in investment and more than 3,000 jobs through the creation of a 300,000-square foot technology, research, and light industrial park.
