The City of Shreveport Makes $400,000 Loan to Clean Up the Southwestern Electric Power Company Property

On June 14, 2000, the City of Shreveport, Louisiana, loaned $400,000 to Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation (SPAR) to assist with cleanup costs associated with the Southwestern Electric Power Company property. This loan was made possible through a $500,000 EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to the City of Shreveport in 1999. The cleanup, which was completed in June 2003, involved the removal of contaminated soil from the property. In addition to EPA funding, SPAR leveraged over $100,000,000 in redevelopment funding through federal, local and private partnerships. A new Convention Center is open for business with 350,000 square feet of space, including a 95,000-square foot convention hall, a 18,000 square foot ballroom, meeting rooms, and all of the necessary public and support space, including a parking garage and a major hotel connected directly to the convention center. The new Convention Center including the hotel created and sustains over 1,000 jobs in the community. For more information about this loan or the City of Shreveport EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund, contact the EPA Region 6 Brownfields Coordinator at (214) 665-6780.
