Toledo Makes $500,000 Loan to Clean Up the Toledo Edison ACME Switchyard Property

In October 2004, the City of Toledo, Ohio executed a $500,000 intra-governmental loan with the Toledo Department of Economic and Community Development to assist with the cleanup costs associated with the Toledo Edison ACME Switchyard property. This loan was made possible through a $500,000 EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to the City of Toledo in September 2000. The 2.4-acre Toledo Edison ACME Switchyard property was formerly a fenced-in area that included transformers and other electrical equipment. From 1918 to 1994, the property was surrounded by a former fossil fuel generation power plant and was eventually vacated in 1995. Cleanup activities were completed in late 2005 and included the removal of transformer oils, transformers, and soils, all of which were contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The property is part of a 125-acre waterfront redevelopment project that will ultimately include a mixture of recreational, residential, and commercial uses, including a full-service marina along the Maumee River. For more information about this loan or the City of Toledo EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund, contact the EPA Region 5 Brownfields Coordinator at (312) 886-7576.
