This Web page presents information about Brownfields '97, a conference that brought together key experts from all levels of government, business, and finance and from local communities to share ideas and experiences in the field of urban and environmental development. Participants in the conference focused their efforts on properties known as "brownfields" - abandoned, idle, or underused industrial and commercial properties at which real or perceived contamination interferes with efficient expansion or redevelopment efforts. Brownfields '97, the largest and most comprehensive brownfields event in the United States, was held in Kansas City, Missouri, September 3 through 5, 1997. Approximately 1,900 participants attended the conference.
