Dennis Grams, Regional Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 7, will present a $100,000 check to Mayor Robert Ray of Des Moines, Iowa for a Regional Brownfields Pilot. The grant will help to redevelop a 1,200-acre tract of land that has a history of environmental contamination. The presentation ceremony will be Thursday, October 9, 1997, at 10:00 a.m. adjacent to the Hallett Materials East Des Moines Operation, just off Vandalia Road and north on SE 36th Street.

The planned park seeks to redevelop the under-used industrial sites within Des Moines Agribusiness Park that are or have been threatened by environmental contamination for re-use by businesses in the agricultural sector.

Brownfields are abandoned, idled, or under-used industrial and commercial facilities where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination.
