ICMA

EPA BROWNFIELDS PROGRAM

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, tribes, communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA funds eligible applicants through assistance agreements to provide training, research, and technical assistance to facilitate brownfields revitalization.

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

Since 2003, ICMA has co-sponsored the National Brownfields Conference with EPA. ICMA was founded in 1914, and is the premier local government leadership and management organization. Its mission is to create excellence in local governance by advocating and developing the professional management of local government worldwide. In addition to supporting its 8,200 members, ICMA provides technical and management assistance, training, and information resources in the areas of performance measurement, ethics education and training, community and economic development, environmental management, technology, and other topics to its members and the broader local government community.

Project Description:
ICMA organizes, plans, and implements the technical program for the National Brownfields Conference. The next conference will take place May 5-7, 2008, at the Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan. Additionally, ICMA maintains the conference web site, www.brownfields2008.org, and also coordinates marketing and outreach. The last conference in 2006 had more than 5,000 attendees. The technical program includes over 130 panel and roundtable sessions, in addition to plenary sessions, mobile workshops, the Brownfields Transaction Forum, a poster gallery, and an extensive exhibit hall with 250 exhibitors.
