University of Louisville Center for Environmental Policy and ManagementEPA BROWNFIELDS PROGRAMEPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, tribes, communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA funds eligible applicants through assistance agreements to provide training, research, and technical assistance to facilitate brownfields revitalization. ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTIONThe University of Louisville Center for Environmental Policy and Management (CEPM) seeks to improve the economic efficiency and environmental efficacy outcomes of governmental and business environmental management practices. It specializes in economic development and environmental protection, including contaminated land redevelopment and smart growth planning. In October 2005, CEPM, in partnership with Louisville Metro Government's Economic Development Department and the non-profit Center for Neighborhoods, developed the "Brownfields Institute," a series of workshops providing a forum for building community knowledge about brownfields cleanup, especially in the Park Hill Corridor of Western Louisville, Kentucky.
