FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY JANUARY 19, 2001

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR ADDITIONAL BROWNFIELDS PROJECTS

Bonnie Piper 202- 564-4355

The deadline has been extended to Feb. 16 for applications for brownfields pilot projects under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Brownfields Prevention Initiative. This initiative is designed to prevent future contamination and encourage reuse of facilities regulated by the RCRA program. EPA is seeking applications for six new pilot projects under the second round of the RCRA Brownfields Prevention Initiative.

In April 2000, EPA announced the selection of the first round of pilot projects. The cleanup and redevelopment plans for first round pilot projects are underway and have benefitted by red tape reduction and effective communication among governments, key decision makers, and communities. For more information, contact Jose E. Labiosa at 202-260-1910 or by e-mail at: labiosajose@epa.gov. For information about the RCRA Brownfields Prevention Initiative, go to: www.epa.gov/brownfields.
