Brownfields Success Stories

Attracting Big Business Leads to Positive Results for Emeryville

Prosperity and cutting-edge research and development facilities are gradually replacing blight in Emeryville, CA, a City that saw much of its industry abandon the area during the 1970s. To aid in the City's cleanup and redevelopment efforts, EPA awarded Emeryville a $200,000 grant under EPA's Brownfields Initiative in March, 1996. EPA and Emeryville have since been working together to rejuvenate the City and the surrounding area, targeting ten sites and more than 180 acres for cleanup and redevelopment. The City and Catellus Development Corporation now plan to construct 200 units of residential housing on an abandoned, four-acre railroad site. Approximately 100 construction workers have already been hired to build these housing units. Within the next five years, construction of retail, hotel and office complexes is expected to create as many as 10,600 jobs and nearly 4 million square feet of new facilities, and provide an additional $6.4 million in annual property tax revenues. Chiron Corporation, the second-largest biotechnology firm in the country, plans to construct 12 new buildings totaling 2.2 million square feet over the next 20 years. Other planned construction projects for office and housing facilities bring the total to 3.9 million square feet. Already, the project has leveraged $644 million in private investment and $6.3 million in public sector funding.
