NoticeOn March 29, 2005 EPA issued final Guidelines for Carcinogen Risk Assessment, along with an associated document entitled Supplemental Guidance for Assessing Susceptibility from Early-Life Exposure to Carcinogens. Both documents are available at www.epa.gov/cancerguidelines.
The related document Draft Final Guidelines for Carcinogen Risk Assessment is also available online.
The Draft Final Guidelines for Carcinogen Risk Assessment, also issued today for comment, explicitly call for consideration of possible susceptible subpopulations and/or lifestages (such as childhood). The discussion of childhood risks in that document has been augmented by the development of the separate draft document entitled "Supplemental Guidance for Assessing Cancer Susceptibility from Early-Life Exposure to Carcinogens." The supplemental guidance contains an analysis of studies and a possible approach for how quantitative scientific data could inform risk assessments when exposure to carcinogens occurs during childhood is considered.
As announced in the Federal Register on March 3, 2003, EPA is requesting comments on the draft supplemental guidance. A Federal Register Notice published April 14, 2003 extended the public comment period to June 2, 2003. The draft document will be reviewed by EPA's Science Advisory Board (SAB) May 12-14, 2003. After SAB recommendations and public comments are incorporated into the document, the supplemental guidance will be issued separately from the final Cancer Guidelines so that it may be more easily updated in a timely manner given the expected rapid evolution of scientific understanding about the effects of early-life exposures.
