| Size of Award | In May 2008 the Alaska legislature authorized the creation of a renewable energy grant fund and recommendation program to be administered by the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA). There is no exact limit on the grant amount or minimum applicant contributions. However, applications with matching funds will be looked upon favorably. The enabling legislation states an intention to provide $50 million in funding annually to the program for five years. However, for fiscal year 2009 the program has been appropriated $125 million for grant awards. The initial allocation plan recommends that 20 percent of the funding go to reconnaissance, feasibility, and resource studies, and the remaining 80 percent be awarded to final design, permitting, and construction projects. |

| Additional Information | The grant program is intended to provide assistance to utilities, independent power producers, local governments, and tribal governments for things like feasibility studies, energy resource monitoring, and work related to the design and construction of eligible facilities. The AEA doesn't approve projects, but will issue recommendations to the state legislature, which will make the ultimate funding decisions. |
