Incentive Size and Funding SourceCHP projects in Rhode Island are eligible for a combination of energy efficiency, performance rebates, and advanced gas technology incentives. The total incentive package cannot exceed 70% of total project cost and is subject to budgetary limitations and caps. Customers are allowed to participate in both the energy efficiency and advanced gas technology programs, as long as they meet both sets of requirements.

Performance rebates and energy efficiency incentives:
  • $900/kW per net kW for projects with 55% to 59.99% efficiency (net kW is nameplate kW output minus auxiliary).
  • $1,000/kW for projects with 60% or greater efficiency.
  • A 25% bonus is available to facilities that have implemented (or plan on implementing) energy efficiency measures in the previous five years that have reduced on site energy use by at least 5%.
The advanced gas technology program is designed to add natural gas load during National Grid's off peak period, rather than reducing load through conservation efforts. National Grid gives incentives to innovative projects that add non-heating load. The incentive amount is determined by:
  • Additional margin gain from the project, up to 75% of the project's future margin.
  • 75% of the project cost.
  • Amount needed to buy down the payback period to 1.5 years.
  • Remaining advanced gas technology fund balance.

Other Incentive DetailsThe following guidelines apply to large projects:
  • Projects 1 MW or larger are eligible for a performance incentive of $20/kW-year for metered load reduction.
  • Projects 1 MW or larger must commit to 10 years of operation or will have to refund a prorated portion of the incentive.
  • Incentives greater than $3 million are subject to PUC approval.
