Climate Showcase Communities Grant
Local Programs
Update (October 5): EPA is currently developing agreements with 25 applicants for the Climate Showcase Communities Program. Final awards will be announced by January 2010 (sooner if possible) and will include a variety of projects that will be managed by a national cross section of local governments and tribes.
The Fiscal Year 2009 Appropriations Bill authorized EPA to administer a $10 million competitive grant program to assist local and tribal governments in establishing and implementing climate change initiatives. The overall goal of the Climate Showcase Communities grant program is to create replicable models of sustainable community action that generate cost-effective and persistent greenhouse gas reductions while improving the environmental, economic, public health, or social conditions in a community.
EPA will offer peer exchange, training, and technical support to grant recipients, and encourage replication across the country to promote the creation of sustainable climate management programs that are not only the foundation for stabilizing our climate but also create jobs and fulfill other local government priorities.
The application period for this grant program closed on July 22, 2009. The original Request for Applications (PDF) (22 pp., 265K, About PDF) and Questions and Answers about the Request for Applications (PDF) (22 pp., 265K) are available. Eligibility for the program included local governments (e.g., a county, municipality, city, town, township, local public authority, school district, special district, intrastate district, council of governments), federally recognized Indian tribal governments, and inter-tribal consortia. A 50 percent cost match or cost share was required for this program with the exception of tribal governments and intertribal consortia, which are exempt from matching requirements.
