State Advisory Board

Status: Completed

Details: On September 14, 2007, Governor Sarah Palin signed Administrative Order No. 238, officially forming the Alaska Climate Change Sub-Cabinet. The Sub-Cabinet is charged with preparing and implementing an Alaska Climate Change Strategy. This will be a transparent document which deals with state policies for anticipated climate change. The group will consist of various state commissioners and will be chaired by the Environmental Conservation department commissioner. On May 9, 2006 the Alaska Legislature passed HCR 30, creating the Alaska Climate Impact Assessment Commission. The Commission is charged with assessing the impacts and costs of climate change and developing recommendations for adaptation to climate change impacts.

GHG Inventory

Status: Completed

Details: The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation released an updated GHG inventory ("Summary Report of Improvements to the Alaska Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory") in January, 2008.
Previously, a state-commissioned report prepared by the Center for Climate Strategies in conjunction with nine Western states estimated the sources and amounts of GHG emissions in Alaska from 1990 through 2020. The state used this report as a starting point for the more in-depth analysis released in January, 2008.

Climate Change Action Plan

Status: In Progress

On March 1, 2007, the Alaska Climate Impact Assessment Commission released a preliminary report to the legislature; following a series of public meetings through 2007, the commission made a final report to the legislature on March 17, 2008. On May 2006, the Alaska legislature passed HCR 30 (funded directly by the legislature, does not require Governor approval), which created the Alaska Climate Impact Assessment Commission. The Commission is charged with assessing the impacts and costs of climate change and developing recommendations for adaptation to climate change impacts.
