| Company Description Abbott is a broad-based, global health care company devoted to discovering new medicines, new medical technologies, and new ways to improve and manage health. Their products span the continuum of care, from nutritional products and laboratory diagnostics to medical devices and pharmaceutical therapies. Their comprehensive line of products encircles life — addressing important health needs from infancy to the golden years. Abbott has more than 65,000 employees around the world in more than 100 operating sites throughout 60 countries. Headquartered in north suburban Chicago, they have major R&D centers in North America, Europe, and Asia. Abbott's "Promise for Life" and commitment to improving lives is not limited to the patients who benefit from their products. It also includes their employees and the global community of which they are a part. For Abbott, global citizenship means ensuring good governance, valuing their employees, affecting policy changes that help patients, making sure people can get the medicines they need, working to fight HIV/AIDS and investing locally and globally in ways that make a real difference. Abbott conducts active programs in public education; environment, health, safety; and access to health care. They report on these efforts and others in their annual citizenship report. "As a leading global health care company, Abbott is committed to improving health — of people and of our environment. Our partnership with EPA Climate Leaders is one way we are actively working to conserve energy and improve the health of our world." - Bob Accarino, Director, Global Environmental Affairs | |
| Reasons for Joining Climate Leaders Abbott considers climate change an important and complex global issue. They have a long-standing commitment to reducing consumption of energy and emission of greenhouse gases. They achieve success by engaging with organizations in programs that add to their knowledge and also ones in which they can contribute their expertise. Climate Leaders is a voluntary initiative that is focused on results and making a difference and they are proud to be a participant. | |
| GHG Reductions Before Joining Climate Leaders In the early 1970s, Abbott started to implement energy conservation activities in their manufacturing locations. By 2001, the energy used by their U.S. manufacturing facilities had decreased to less than one-third of the amount used in 1973, measured as energy per unit produced. Between 2002 and 2005, they decreased energy intensity in their manufacturing facilities worldwide by approximately 17 percent. In 2005, they established a five-year performance goal to reduce CO2 emissions from direct, indirect, and mobile sources by 10 percent by 2010, using 2004 as a baseline. In 2005, they achieved a 1.5 percent reduction. | |
| Approach to GHG Management Abbott's plan for reducing greenhouse gas emissions includes focusing on both direct and indirect CO2 emissions. Their strategy is to improve energy efficiency and to use energy that is produced through more efficient processes, such as cogeneration. Their plan is focused on three core areas: 1. Reducing energy use in manufacturing operations and other business activities. 2. Reducing energy needs in their supply and distribution chain. 3. Participating in voluntary programs and initiatives. They have utilized energy efficient lighting, various building efficiency technologies, and cogeneration in order to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions. They are introducing hybrid technology and low emission vehicles into their fleet in order to reduce fleet emissions. They will continue to evaluate other technologies and incorporate them as appropriate. | |
