| Company Description Based in St. Louis, Anheuser-Busch is the leading American brewer, holding a 48.4 percent share of U.S. beer sales. The company brews the world's largest-selling beers, Budweiser and Bud Light. Anheuser Busch also owns a 50 percent share in Grupo Modelo, Mexico's leading brewer, and a 27 percent share in China brewer Tsingtao, whose namesake beer brand is the country's best-selling premium beer. Anheuser-Busch is one of the largest theme park operators in the United States, is a major manufacturer of aluminum cans and one of the world's largest recyclers of aluminum cans, recycling more than it packages at its breweries - more than 27 billion cans annually. Anheuser-Busch's voluntary participation in Climate Leaders continues a tradition of operating with care and concern for the environment dating back to 1899, when the company first recycled used brewing grain to feed cattle. The brewer was also one of the first corporations to address the problems of litter and waste disposal. Conserving resources and improving efficiency are part of daily operations at Anheuser-Busch facilities. In the last five years, company breweries have reduced their energy use by 8 percent per barrel of beer packaged. The company also recycles more than 97 percent of all its solid waste generated. In addition, Anheuser-Busch is the world's largest operator of Bio-Energy Recovery Systems. This innovative wastewater management process produces biogas, a renewable energy source. The use of biogas offsets boiler fuel purchases, reducing the breweries' reliance on fossil fuels. In 2006, the company recovered enough biogas to supply energy to nearly 15,000 homes. For the fourth year in a row, the company ranked No. 1 among beverage companies on the 2007 FORTUNE Magazine's Most Admired U.S. Companies list and No. 1 in the beverage industry for social responsibility. "At Anheuser-Busch, every choice we make regarding the earth, air, and water around us is made with the objective of preserving them for generations to come," said Doug Muhleman, group vice president, Brewing Operations and Technology. "As part of our comprehensive climate change strategy, we are constantly looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment in our daily operations by reducing energy use and searching for economically renewable fuel alternatives." | |
