GoalCalifornia Portland Cement Company pledges to reduce U.S. GHG emissions by 9 percent per production index from 2003 to 2012.
Company Description
California Portland Cement Company is the oldest continually producing portland cement company west of the Rocky Mountains, producing not only cement and concrete, but also Precast Manholes, Redi-Rock, Truss Pipe, Corrugated Pipe & Fittings, Catch Basins, Aggregates, Building Materials, Sand, Gravel, Rock, Everdure Caltite, and Arxx - Insulated Concrete Forms. California Portland Cement has become a leader in its industry through the company's commitment to quality, customer service, safety, and environmental excellence. For more than 100 years, California Portland Cement (CPC) has been a major supplier of cement and concrete for the construction industry throughout the Southwestern United States.

CPC has won many awards for energy reduction efforts from the Environmental Protection Agency ENERGY STAR program, California's Flex Your Power program, the Arizona Governor's Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency, as well as the Portland Cement Association's Environmental Award for Energy Efficiency. CPC’s Glacier Northwest division received environmental excellence awards from the National Ready-Mixed Concrete Association and the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association for three facilities in 2003. Most recently, CPC’s Colton and Mojave cement plants received the ENERGY STAR for Plants at the World Energy Engineering Conference in September 2006.
Reasons for Joining Climate Leaders
California Portland Cement Company joined Climate Leaders to enhance progress toward sustainable development through environmental excellence. By quantifying its greenhouse gas reductions through Climate Leaders, CPC can demonstrate the benefits of its energy management efforts in improving communities, extending natural resources, and improving productivity.

During the presentation of the Portland Cement Association Energy Efficiency Award at the Mojave cement plant, President and CEO Jim Repman stated, “CPC is committed to sustainable development for the future of the environment and the communities in which we operate.”
GHG Reductions Before Joining Climate Leaders
California Portland Cement (CPC) has a commitment to capital improvements to improve energy efficiency and consequently reduce greenhouse gas emissions. CPC has projects in progress that will result in reduction of annual electricity consumption by about 10 percent in California - roughly 31 million kWh - saving nearly $3 million each year and reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the annual emissions of about 2,000 cars. Savings stem from a host of process improvements and equipment upgrades, including installation of a grinding mill that uses new technology to reduce energy consumption by 40 percent compared to older mills. CPC recently received the ENERGY STAR for Plants for its Colton and Mojave cement plants. The ENERGY STAR for Plants is given to industrial facilities that rank above the 75th percentile for similar technology facilities.

California Portland Cement was one of the earliest industrial partners in the voluntary Department of Energy 1605(b) Greenhouse Gas ClimateWise program. Since joining in 1996, CPC's efforts to reduce greenhouse gases have resulted in over 1.25 million metric tons of carbon dioxide reductions from 1990 to 2003. This is the equivalent of planting 347,000 acres of trees or providing electricity for nearly 169,000 American homes.
Approach to GHG Management
Through CPC’s participation in the EPA ENERGY STAR program, energy management and greenhouse gas management go hand in hand. With a strong commitment to improving energy efficiency, greenhouse gas management has become second nature for CPC. CPC’s energy management program includes regular meetings of a committee consisting of executives, plant engineers, and operators focused on reducing energy consumption and hence greenhouse gas emissions. By managing energy consumption the company becomes more profitable while reducing its impact on the environment, truly a win-win situation.
Progress Towards Goal Completion
CPC has been compiling baseline documentation, which is nearly complete. With the Climate Leaders program, CPC is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions per production unit by 9 percent from 2003 to 2012. Given CPC’s extensive prior reduction efforts, this aggressive goal will not be easily accomplished. The company believes it can be done through innovative new products, improved plant efficiency through upgrades and further tuning, and alternative energy sources aimed at reducing its impact on the environment. Alternative energy sources currently being evaluated include bio-diesel for fleet trucks, wind power, and methods to allow increased tire-derived fuel usage to minimize the number of tires stored in landfills.
