Company Description
CSX Transportation Inc. is a principal operating company of CSX Corporation. CSX Corporation, based in Jacksonville, Fla., is one of the leading transportation companies, providing rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transload services. The company’s transportation network spans 21,000 miles with service to 23 eastern states and the District of Columbia, and connects to more than 70 ocean, river and lake ports.

“CSX Transportation is committed to environmental stewardship,” said CSX Corporation Chairman, President and CEO Michael J. Ward. “We’ve made significant improvements in our environmental performance even as the nation's reliance on freight rail transportation has increased. We look forward to working with the EPA as a Climate Leaders Partner to build on our progress and further reduce emissions.”
Reasons for Joining Climate Leaders
CSXT understands that what's good for the environment is good for its customers, its employees and its bottom line. That's why the company is developing long-term, comprehensive climate change strategies and is leading the way to cleaner air through increased fuel efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

In March 2007, CSXT became the first company in the transportation industry to join the EPA’s Climate Leaders program, pledging to annually inventory and publicly report its greenhouse gas emissions and establish a voluntary goal for emissions reduction. The EPA estimates that for every ton-mile, a typical truck emits roughly three times more nitrogen oxides and particulates than a locomotive. That means every time a customer diverts freight traffic from truck to rail, they are taking steps to improve the environment. In addition, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) estimates that if just 10% of the nation’s freight diverted to rail, fuel savings would approach one billion gallons annually.
GHG Reductions Before Joining Climate Leaders
When compared to alternative ground transportation options, rail is by far the most fuel-efficient way to transport freight. The AAR estimates that the nation's freight railroads have improved fuel efficiency a dramatic 80 percent since 1980, which conserves fossil fuel and reduces emissions. CSXT has done its part to achieve this considerable environmental efficiency by investing in the latest Tier II clean air locomotives produced by GE. These locomotives are rated at the latest EPA emission requirements.
In addition, CSXT continues to pursue locomotive shut-down systems to reduce fuel consumption and reduce related emissions. The systems include the CSXT-developed Auxiliary Power Unit – which uses an idle mode that EcoTrans Technologies estimates reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by 91 percent, hydrocarbons by 95 percent, carbon monoxide by 96 percent and particulate matter by 84 percent – as well as builder-supplied automatic Start/Stop systems that increase the amount of time a locomotive can be shut down, as opposed to idling, via an automated system. We are also working with state and local groups to further enhance local yard and local locomotive emission systems.
Approach to GHG Management
It is CSXT’s long-standing commitment to continuous, consistent environmental improvement that has allowed the company to reduce its annual fuel use through new technology and conservation efforts.

In addition, the company is upgrading its locomotive fleet with more efficient, environmentally friendly locomotives. By 2009, more than 1,200 CSXT locomotives will have been upgraded to further reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

CSXT recognizes the importance of conserving all raw materials, not just fuel. Through programs and policies, CSXT encourages recycling and waste minimization. Suppliers are encouraged to use reusable or recyclable containers for all goods the railroad receives for shipping. Recycling allows the company to do its part in reducing the amount of material sent to landfills, and to improve its bottom line as these materials are either reused or sold.

CSXT also serves as a critical link in transporting renewable energy sources, such as biofuels and wind power turbines. By reducing and diversifying the nation’s fuel consumption, CSXT is helping the country reduce its dependence on foreign oil.
