Company Description
One of the world's leading biotechnology companies, Genzyme is dedicated to making a major positive impact on the lives of people with serious diseases. Since 1981, the company has grown from a small start-up to a diversified enterprise with more than 9,500 employees in locations spanning the globe and 2006 revenues of $3.2 billion.

With many established products and services helping patients in nearly 90 countries, Genzyme is a leader in the effort to develop and apply the most advanced technologies in the life sciences. The company's products and services are focused on rare inherited disorders, kidney disease, orthopaedics, cancer, transplant, and diagnostic testing. Genzyme's commitment to innovation continues today with a substantial development program focused on these fields, as well as immune disease, infectious disease, and other areas of unmet medical need.

In 2007, Genzyme was chosen to receive the National Medal of Technology, the highest honor awarded by the President of the United States for technological innovation. In 2006 and 2007, Genzyme was selected by FORTUNE as one of the “100 Best Companies to Work for” in the United States. Genzyme's corporate headquarters, Genzyme Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is recognized as one of the most environmentally responsible office buildings in the United States, and earned Platinum certification under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™.

“As we expand the portfolio of products and services we provide to our patients, our business continues to grow. Within this context of growth, Genzyme has, over the years, undertaken several initiatives to reduce our environmental footprint. For example, we have incorporated the concepts of green building design into the facilities we have built over the past several years, and we will continue to do so for all future construction worldwide. Whether it is the simple, such as making double-sided printouts, or the more complex, such as the installation of sophisticated building management systems, we each have a role to play in protecting our environment. We strongly encourage our employees to think about the environmental impact of their actions, seek to minimize that impact, and help fulfill our goal of sustainable growth." W. Blair Okita, PhD Senior Vice President, Quality & Technical Operations Chair of Health, Safety & Environmental Senior Steering Committee
Reasons for Joining Climate Leaders
Scientists and environmental leaders worldwide have identified global climate change as the most serious environmental issue facing the world today. During Genzyme's 2006 Environmental Summit meeting, the company focused on this issue and agreed to establish a long-term, company-wide initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Genzyme decided to join Climate Leaders because it believes that the program's valuable tools, technical assistance and networking opportunities will enable the company to successfully develop its greenhouse gas emissions reduction initiative, while also building upon the company's commitment to leadership in environmentally responsible business practices.
