Notice
Note: EPA no longer updates this information, but it may be useful as a reference or resource.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is no longer supporting or updating the Groundwater Information Tracking System/Statistic Software (GRITS/STAT). The software is somewhat outdated and there are a number of commercially available packages that are more up-to-date. GRITS/STAT is provided here for reference only.

What is GRITS/STAT?
You will need Adobe Reader to view some of the files on this page. See EPA's PDF page to learn more.
EPA's Groundwater Information Tracking System/Statistic Software (GRITS/STAT) is in wide use at waste management facilities implementing groundwater monitoring requirements under the RCRA Subtitle C (hazardous waste) and RCRA Subtitle D (municipal waste) programs. GRITS/STAT can be used at sites conducting groundwater monitoring to store, analyze and report groundwater data, and to conduct statistical tests to determine if regulatory thresholds have been met or exceeded. GRITS/STAT version 5.0 and its associated documentation were updated in July, 1997 and are available at this web site.

GRITS/STAT Software Installation Instructions
- Using the Windows File Manager create the following directories on
your hard drive:
- GRITDISK
- GRITDISK\DISK1
- GRITDISK\DISK2
- GRITDISK\DISK3
- GRITDISK\DISK4
- Download the file DISK1.exe by clicking on the link and saving
the file to the newly created directory GRITDISK\DISK1
- Repeat Step #2 for the files DISK2.exe, DISK3.exe, and DISK4.exe,
saving them to the respective directories GRITDISK\DISK2, GRITDISK\DISK3,
and GRITDISK\DISK4.
- The files DISK1.exe, DISK2.exe, DISK3.exe, and DISK4.exe are all
self extracting Zip files. Using the Windows File Manager double click
on the file named DISK1.exe. It will automatically decompress into several
installation files. Repeat the same procedure for the files DISK2.exe,
DISK3.exe, and DISK4.exe.
- The GRITS/STAT Software was programmed to install from the floppy
disk drive (drive A), therefore you will need to format four 1.44MB
High Density Diskettes
- Label the first diskette: "GRITS/STAT5.0 Disk 1"
- Label the second diskette: "GRITS/STAT5.0 Disk 2"
- Label the third diskette: "GRITS/STAT5.0 Disk 3"
- Label the fourth diskette: "GRITS/STAT5.0 Disk 4"
- Delete the original self extracting Zip file DISK1.exe from the directory
GRITDISK\DISK1. Copy all the remaining files from the GRITDISK\DISK1
directory to the diskette labeled "GRITS/STAT5.0 Disk1." If you do not
delete the original Zip file there will not be enough memory on the
diskette for all the files. Repeat this procedure for the remaining
three diskettes.
- Once you have copied all four diskettes you may use them to install
GRITS/STAT5.0 on any MS-DOS based computer. You will also want to keep
the diskettes as a back-up.
- You will need to exit Windows to install GRITS/STAT. Insert the first
diskette labeled "GRITS/STAT5.0 Disk 1" into drive A. From the MS-DOS
prompt type A:INSTALL and press the Enter key.

GRITS/STAT Year 2000 Information
The Year 2000 white paper provides a succinct explanation of the use
of the GRITS/STAT 5.0 software and the year 2000 problem.
Note: Only GRITS SAGE version 1.1 will allow entry of data with
dates after the year 2000. Since March, 1999, version 1.1 has been available
on this website (in file disk3.exe). Chapter 10 of the users manual (which
describes the use of GRITS SAGE) incorrectly references an older version
of GRITS SAGE (version 1.0d).
