Session II: Leveraging Early Adopters and Environmentally Motivated Consumers Individual Consumers Tapping into the Green Consumer Mind Set-

What makes 15% of the population choose greener products over their "brown"counterparts? It starts with an attitude of needing to feel control over their lives, and doing so by using the power of their purchasing.
This talk helped participants understand what's behind consumer's need for control and strategies for overcoming key barriers to green purchasing, barriers that exist for even the most ardent of green consumers. These barriers consist of misperceptions about the quality of green products, the need to understand other benefits of green products besides "saving the planet", and lack of credibility in manufacturers claims.
The talk also showed examples of companies who had addressed these barriers successfully and some who were unsuccessful. Example included Toyota's (Prius), GM's Electric car, Philips Marathon Light Bulbs, Method's "Fight Dirty" empowerment campaign, and HSBC's "No Small Change" campaign, among others.
