About This Project | Findings & Accomplishments | Publications | Partners

EPA is collaborating with the Department of Defense (DOD) and Lansing Cleaners of East Lansing, Illinois, to evaluate the performance of traditional and environmentally preferable cleaning processes for military uniforms. The DOD Defense Supply Center's overall goal is to reduce military personnel exposures to hazardous chemicals at military installations, as well as to reduce costs associated with the storage and disposal of traditional drycleaning solvents. The cleaning of standard military uniforms is being evaluated in wetcleaning and liquid carbon dioxide processes, and the study may be expanded to include other processes in the future.

EPA continues to support the development of standard definitions and test protocols for new processes that will allow changes in care label instructions and facilitate the incorporation of new technologies into professional cleaning operations.
