EDRI Federal Project Inventory:
Multi-disciplinary Collaborative: Behavioral and Biological Effects of Chronic Social Stress

  1. Sponsor Organization: NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION

  2. Project Title: MULTIDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATIVE: BEHAVIORAL AND BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF CHRONIC SOCIALSTRESS

  3. Project Focus: HUMAN HEALTH EFFECTS

  4. Description: Social stress is a common and enduring feature of life with important behavioral andphysiological effects. A multidisciplinary research collaboration between theLaboratory of Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Hawaii and the Laboratoryof Neuroendocrinology at Rockefeller University is aimed at description and analysis ofthese effects. Previous work indicates that single, two-week stress periods can produceincreased defensive behavior and decreased social and reproductive behavior; higherlevels of stress hormones and impairment of mechanisms that normally limit stresshormone action; and widespread changes in brain neurochemical systems. Althoughthese changes are beginning to provide insights into the dynamics of the physiologicaland behavioral response to chronic social stress, completed studies have measuredonly a single time point in the process. The proposed program will investigate thedevelopment of stress-related behavioral and physiological changes over time, and willdetermine the persistence of stress effects following single or multiple periods ofchronic social stress. In addition, individual differences will be examined asdeterminants of responsivity to social stress. The proposed program will thus drawupon the different approaches and expertise of these two research groups to provide auniquely comprehensive description and analysis of the effects of social stress in anecologically appropriate situation.
