EDRI Federal Project Inventory:
The Regulation of Crustacean Development and Reproduction
- Sponsor Organization: NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION
- Project Title: THE REGULATION OF CRUSTACEAN DEVELOPMENT AND REPRODUCTION
- Project Focus: ECOLOGICAL EFFECTS
- Description: Crustaceans are economically important animals, both as fishery
products and asfouling agents of marine structures. The research
described in this application willstudy hormones that affect the
growth and reproduction of these animals. One suchhormone is methyl
farnesoate (MF), a crustacean compound related to juvenilehormone, an
important regulator of insect growth and reproduction. The goal of
thisresearch is to identify those factors that regulate MF production
in crustaceans. Theisolation and characterization of these compounds
will allow us to better understandthe processes regulating crustacean
growth and reproduction, and may yield productsuseful in the
stimulation and/or inhibition of growth by these organisms.
